It is the last week of August – the most tender of times in the year that is at once filled to the brim with anticipation (after all, the first day of school – September 1 – will be here soon, stirring a small excitement in even those that have left their last school decades behind) and bittersweet regret that yet another summer is at its end… But hold your horses! Whoever, wherever, whyever, and whenever said that summer must draw to a close at the end of August?

First, the calendar clearly states that the last day of summer this year is September 21 – that is three weeks of summer found lying around just like that! Second, summer lasts until one can go about their hustle and bustle in a cozy manner outdoors without the cold biting at one’s toes or making one’s teeth chatter. And seeing as calendar months well suited for happy outdoor activities in Estonia are shamefully few, one must enjoy to the fullest the times that do favor out-of-doors endeavors – never mind what the calendar has to say about summer or fall (or any other time of year – remember last year’s “winter”?).

The first essential element that is required in addition to suitable weather to have fun outdoors is – you guessed it! – good company, be it family members, friends, relatives, or nice coworkers. The second thing you need is location: garden, terrace, balcony, why not barbeque grounds or a scenic spot by the sea. Third, (we were just talking about tender summer nights, remember) a little warmth and light couldn’t hurt. It is devotedly romantic to gaze at falling stars, glimmering clouds in the night sky, and the play of Northern lights with your darling dear; however, one must admit that not all of us are destined to relish in such an idyllic scene on a tender summer night – groping about in pitch dark, looking for your child’s lost toy that they absolutely need right this very minute is much less enticing (and way less romantic). Hence, there must be light and there will be light!

But what kind of light? If we adopt another perspective, anyone (also those with kids and other distracting factors) can find a moment here or there for a little idyllic moment and so it is that we do not really long for an extra-hyper-super bright light (especially that bluish light of hospital operating rooms or, god forbid, clothing store changing rooms, you know the one). What if we light some candles? Candles are nice but they drip and melt and you need a special holder for them and if you have a garden tent or pavilion with a white roof, for example, the soot from the candle can leave a dark circle on it (by the way, the same thing can happen when you try to make bath time romantic with candle light but that’s another story). Long story short – it’s much ado about nothing. Yet, the flame of the candle is so pretty, especially in the tender summer night – there must be a way!

Indeed, there is a way and the perfect solution (we promise, it’s one that requires much less ado) does exist! Have you ever heard of powder candles? No?
